Specials Active in Tyrone | On This Day – 6th January 1921
W J KELLY, Charlemont Street, Dungannon, a prominent local Sinn Feiner, was arrested at an early hour on Wednesday morning. He was handed over to the military and conveyed to Derry Prison.
Kelly was interned after the Easter Rebellion of 1916 and shortly afterwards released.
A large force of RIC and Special Constables arrived in Moy [County Tyrone] on Monday evening.
Amongst the many houses searched for arms, ammunition, etc were those of Rev P Quinn, PP and Rev Fr Murray, CC, Moy; the Kearney brothers, cycle agents; J McKearney, flesher; James Conroy, spirit merchant; Henry Tohill, merchant; Joseph Ryan and T McVeigh.
A midnight raid was also made on the farmhouse of Owen Little, Ranaghan.
At an early hour on Tuesday morning many houses were visited in the village of Granville and surrounding districts and it is stated that firearms were confiscated. The residence of Thomas Finn, spirit merchant, Charlemont, near Moy, was also visited by the Special Constabulary but nothing was removed.
Pedestrians in Dungannon and district are held up each night after eleven o’clock by Special Constabulary, questioned and searched.
Constable Charged with Murder
AT TRALEE [County Kerry] Constable Edward Johnston, stationed at Tralee, was charged by the Crown with the manslaughter of Frank Hoffman, Farmersbridge on 10th November.
Hoffman was shot near his own home about the time of the siege of Tralee. He was a Protestant and reputed to be a member of the IRA. He had a brother in the Irish Guards while another brother is an [RIC] District Inspector.
Patrick Connor was with the deceased when a number of lorries came on them on the public road. A shot was fired after which Hoffman fell and all the cars drove off.
De Valera Returns from US
MR de Valera is in Dublin, says the Manchester Guardian. The Government know this. It is thought likely that he has come over from America to take part in any negotiations that are practicable.
The British Government are quite prepared to give him the necessary ‘safe conduct.’
