Historians and others gathered at a unique event at Féile an Phobail to reflect on the impact of Éamon Phoenix’s life and career.
Historians and others discussed Dr Phoenix’s influence, and on the themes and topics he explored during his academic, media and community work.
The event was held at St Mary’s College on Thursday afternoon, as part of Féile an Phobail, and was attended by Mr Phoenix’s wife Alice, and daughter Mary-Alice.
At the event, titled Éamon Phoenix: His Impact and Legacy, Irish News editor Noel Doran hosted a panel discussion with historians Margaret Ward, Marie Coleman and Jason Burke.
Dr Phoenix contributed a daily column On This Day for The Irish News, and was the newspaper’s Cabinet Papers expert.
During the event, the late historian’s wife Alice told the large crowd she is planning to start a foundation in remembrance of his name.
Féile organisers said there was an “absolutely packed hall” at St Mary’s, adding: “The size of the crowd is a tribute to the great esteem that Eamon was held in across society.”
