Books
They were overwhelmingly about culture and history in the north of Ireland, and all were very well received.
In particular, his 1994 book Northern Nationalism: Nationalist Politics, Partition and the Catholic Minority in Northern Ireland 1890-1940 was viewed as a ground-breaking study of an often-marginalised community. It was described as “magisterial” by former Irish News editor Tom Collins.
Likewise, his book on Feis na nGleann, about Gaelic culture and revival in the Glens of Antrim, which had been one of the last Gaelic-speaking areas of Ulster, incredibly well received, not least by the people of the Glens, Rathlin Island and the wider north Antrim area.
